Kyle and I don’t get a lot of weird looks. Or hostile looks. But someone gave him a weird look this past Christmas Day.

We went to the retirement home where my mother lives to have Christmas dinner. They serve a nice meal – and I don’t have to cook!

Everyone who lives in my mom’s retirement home is white. So Kyle was the only non-white person eating dinner.

At one point, this older woman happened to turn to look at our table, and she got this funny look on her face. She turned her head back towards her table, and held her hand up by the side of her face in the way you do when you (a) don’t want to look at someone and (b) want them to know you don’t want to look at them.

At the time, I thought maybe it was because I was trying to cut my braised carrots with a table knife, and my knife made noises on my plate like fingernails on chalkboard.

But I did see her looking at Kyle. It was definitely a weird look.
